Jewelry Care

Platinum is absolutely one of the most durable and rarest precious metals in the world. Resistant to both discoloration and tarnishing, platinum has become a popular modern choice for jewelry. Everybody from corporate businessmen to lyrical musicians are following along in the trend. However, despite its versatility, durability, and malleability, platinum must be properly taken care of or else it will not look nearly as good as it could. With proper care and maintenance, your platinum has the potential to last you a lifetime. You will eventually be able to pass it on to your grand-children and they may one day be able to pass it on to their won grand-children. If you do not take care of it though, then you will not be passing it on to anybody but the trash collector.

Period Cleaning

Period manual or professional cleaning, at least twice a year, will help maintain your platinum’s natural luster and radiance. Platinum can be scoured with a prepackaged cleaner solution or you can pay a professional jeweler to clean it off for you. If you seek professional assistance, make certain you only let a well trained professional work with your jewelry. Cleaning, polishing, resizing, and adjustments are difficult tasks that require the training of a professional bench jeweler. Otherwise, you are taking the risk of seeing your platinum be deformed or take on considerable damage from improper use of cleaning/polishing techniques. If cleaning your platinum jewelry yourself, then proceed by first soaking it within a fairly mild solution of approximately fifty percent warma water and fifty percent ammonia. Then, gently rub it with a soft piece of cloth and wipe all the dust and grime off of it. You can then run it under some warm rinse water and let it dry for awhile. Within a few hours, your jewelry will be ready to wear again.

Storing your Jewelry

When you store your jewelry, do so with care, making sure each one is separately placed from one another. If they rub on one another, they may become scratched. If one does become scratched, you will need to ask your local jeweler to re-polish the piece. If possible, store all your platinum in either a chamois bag, safe box, jewelry box. Even if your jewelry does not get scratched, it will develop a natural patina after a certain amount of time. This will take away the ‘just polished’ appearance that your platinum had when you initially purchased it. At this point in time, you will need to get your jewelry “re-polished”.

Wearing your Jewelry

Never ever under any circumstances wear your platinum or any other type of jewelry when performing manual labor such as gardening, cleaning, mowing the lawn, or mulching. There is no reason you should even consider wearing them in the first place when you are doing such tasks. Dirt and grime will easily get on your jewelry and make a dramatic affect on its appearance. You will have to get it re-polished right away. It is a waste of money and time that could have easily been prevented by some smart thinking. Also avoid wearing your platinum if you are working with harsh chemicals such as bleach. Although mainly harmless to platinum, the chemicals may affect any diamonds or other studs that have been fitted into your jewelry.
